The first open move came from Thebes in late spring. However, when the spring of 431 arrived, both sides began fully mobilizing their armies and fleets, although the senior Spartan king Archidamus II, made a final attempt to avoid war, sending a herald to Athens to urge the Assembly to reconsider their previous decision. Over the winter, the only action was the continuation of the Athenian siege of Potidaea which had begun in 433. Soon the winter months arrived, when little campaigning could be conducted, and Sparta did not bother to muster an army for the short amount of time they had left in 432. Sparta and the Peloponnesian League formally declared war on Athens and the Delian League soon after their demands were refused. If you are unfamiliar with Greek military history or finances, I recommend reading these comments.Īfter the Athenian assembly voted to reject Spartan demands in 432 BC, and Sparta rejected Athens’s counter proposal of 3rd party arbitration over the matters of dispute, it became clear that Greece was headed for a titanic clash. We will also be working more closely with the Athenian state budge, so I have also included a comment covering Money, currencies, and state revenue in Athens. These decisions require a certain amount of knowledge of Greek military strategy and tactics, so I have included in the comments a series of posts about this topic, divided into Land Warfare and Naval Warfare. This includes this week’s election, where we are voting on the strategoi board, the 10 commanders of the Athenian military. This is the start of a new phase of the series, since now that the Peloponnesian War has begun, most of our elections will be for or against generals, or military operations. However, people seem to still be very hostile towards Sparta, as reflected by the statement, /u/Schubsbube saying “We should repeal the decree AND start a war with Sparta.” To the delight of NATO flairs, we have finally gotten our war with Sparta. Last week, r/neoliberal voted overwhelmingly in favor of repealing the Megarian decree, different from how Athenian voters reacted in reality.
